Weightlifters rock Tema

SONY DSCThe Tema Power Weight Lifters Association  (TEWPLA) has held a day’s competition to whip up interest in the sports within the Tema Metropolis.

Held at the forecourt of the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) in the Greater Accra Region, the event was aimed at promoting peace, education and fitness, drawing competitors from the gyms in the area.

Participants competed in junior lightweight, lightweight, middleweight and heavyweight divisions.

At the end of the competition Eric Abaza emerged winner in the junior lightweight division.

Jones Quessa won the lightweight division; Mohammed Gatuso took the honours in middleweight with Ibrahim Issifu emerging tops in the heavyweight division respectively.

According to the President of TEWPLA, Razak Ibrahim, the sport have been tagged with all manner of negative descriptions but assured that the association is doing all it can to erase such mentality.

“Some of our weightlifters get themselves involved in arm robbery, land guarding, bullying of people and other social activities in society, bringing the name of the sport into disrepute ” he stressed.

He said a periodic sensitization programme would be held for members under the TEWPLA on the need to accord themselves the needed trust and respect from the public.

The president said the sport needs financial and material push to compete with already established ones as they strive to make it to the Olympics and other international competitions.
