The Bawdie community in the Wassa Amenfi East District of the Western Region, was thrown into a state of shock on Wednesday, when news broke out that the Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the area, Mr. Kofi Anim, had allegedly shot himself to death.
Reports said Mr. Anim shot himself with a single- barreled gun in the chest and died. The police have described the incident as a suicide.
The Ghanaian Times gathered that, Mr. Anima alias Kotoko, a prominent driver, alias Koloko, and a former Chairman of the local Ghana Private Road Transport Union(GPRTU) and also a hotelier, allegedly took the action, after battling a protracted illness for about six years.
The body has since been deposited at the Prestea Government Hospital Mortuary for autopsy while the police have also stepped up their investigations into the matter.
Confirming the incident, the District Police Commander for Prestea, Superintendent Thomas Dassah, recalled that Mr. Anim had been sick for some years now, after being involved in an accident.
He said, the wife told the police that, the pain in the injured hand had been a harrowing and traumatic experience for him.
Recently, he said, Mr.Anim complained of severe pain and was sent to the Prestea Government Hospital where he was referred for further check-ups at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi.
Supt. Dasssah told The Ghanaian Times that the incident happened on Wednesday when the wife and the rest of the family were preparing to set-off for KATH.
A brother of Mr. Anim, Mr. Samuel Mayne confirmed the incident, and told The Ghanaian Times that the incident occurred at about 1pm on Wednesday, indicating that the family had reported the matter to the police.
“We suspect no foul play, my brother has been ill for about six years now, after he had a fatal accident and has been indoors since then. On Wednesday afternoon, he shot himself,” he added.
