Wahid Omar named best boxer at individual championship

Wisdom gym’s boxer, Abdul Wahid Omar was adjudged the overall best boxer at the just ended Ghana Boxing Federation’s (GBF) individual boxing championship held at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Omar, a member of the Black Bombers team who was Ghana’s sole representative at the Rio Olympic Games 2016 in Brazil won gold at the lightweight division after the three-day competition.

He crowned an impressive display with a convincing performance that saw him defeat Samuel Martei Laryea of Accra Boxing club to win the division.

The championship, aimed at selecting new boxers into the team, attracted over 100 young boxers, according to Head Coach Ofori Asare.

He explained that the 20 finalists and semi finalists would be selected to form the nucleus of the new Black Bombers who are going to be groomed.

In the finals of the super heavyweight, a graduate of the University of Ghana, Felix Agboletey of the Wisdom gym earned a TKO win over Welbeck Olivierra just as the light heavyweight where Issah Inusah of Attoh Quarshie earned a similar feat over Yahaya Yusifu.

Roformers’ pride, Jessie Lartey, Ghana’s only bronze medalist at the 2018 Commonwealth Games won in his division after defeating Bawa Sheriff from the Upper West region.

Seaview gym recorded mixed results as Mohammed Aryeetey beat Theo Allotey of Wisdom gym to win his division but Ben Ankrah was crashed by Samuel Addo of Attoh Quashie gym.

Abraham Mensah of Seconds Out gym proved too strong for Mohammed Fuseini from the Charles Quartey Gym while Daniel Oduro of Attoh Quarshie defeated Abubakar Quartey of the Wisdom gym.

Musah Rahman Lawson maintained his dominance at the middleweight division as he accounted for Shakul Samir of the Akotoku Academy while Anani Kutsoke of Reformers beat Bawa David of the Ghana Army.

Mr George Lamptey, GBF President, George Lamptey expressed excitement at the huge attendance and called for corporate sector support to organise more of such events to keep boxers busy.

He thanked the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Madar Soap, National Sports Authority (NSA) and the Ghana Boxing Supporters Union for their support for the championship.
