The Volta River Authority (VRA) has handed over 30 standalone toilet facilities to the people of Dzebetato, a community in the South Tongu District of the Volta Region.
The donation was collaboration between the authority and Biofil Company as part of their efforts to fulfil their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programmes in areas they operate in nationwide.
The facilities are expected to solve the problem of open defecation which is a major sanitation issue in the community as well as improving a healthy lifestyle of children in schools.
Mr Emmanuel Fletcher, VRA Manager, in charge of CSR said that, “sanitation issues is a concern to all that is why we have taken it as a priority to help improve on the standards of living in the communities we operate in”.
This, he said, “falls in line with our tagline ‘The New Standard’, which is also aimed at developing communities in which we work in as part of our CSR.”
He urged the school children to make good use of the facility by maintaining it well and washing their hands after visiting the facility.
The District Chief Executive of South Tongu District, Mr Emmanuel Agama, on his part, thanked the authority for fulfilling its promise to construct “this facility for the community and pledged that, the Assembly would ensure that it is in good shape at all times”.
He said sanitation and hygienic endemics would only be reduced if proper measures are put in place to curb such menace.
He therefore thanked the authority for this initiative and promised that his outfit would do more to cut to the minimum the spread of communicable diseases like cholera and its affiliates.
As part of their CSR initiatives, the authority plans to construct more of such facilities across Ghana in selected communities they operate in.
