Volunteers Receive Bicycles

VSO 18-11The 2013 Exemplary National Volunteers Awards ceremony has been held at Tamale, at which 30 volunteers in the Northern Region were honoured.

Each of them was presented a bicycle, a certificate and a solar lamp.

The bicycles are to assist the volunteers to go about their assignments smoothly, and also encourage them to impart knowledge to the young ones, especially in the education sector.

This is the collaboration of the Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO), the National Service Scheme (NSS) and the Zochonis Charity Trust, to assist volunteers to reduce poverty, through volunteerism, especially in the Northern Region.

Under the programme, the VSO and NSS will employ 500 national service men and women as teachers in rural communities which lack professional and trained teachers.

They will also support community mobilisation and monitor the performances of over 4,900 disadvantaged children in school, especially girls,

The Northern Regional Director of the National Service Scheme, Alhaji Shaibu Abiwu, commended VSO for introducing the awards, to motivate volunteers to serve in rural communities, to improve their living standards.

He said since the inception of the project in 2003, volunteers had influenced deprived communities with their skills, talents and energies, in the fight against poverty and illiteracy.

A beneficiary, Mrs. Jennifer Asokowine Akomanyi, commended VSO and NSS,  and promised on behalf of her colleagues, to do their best in the  impartation of knowledge to the young ones, at their duty posts. From Geoffrey Buta, Tamale
