UTAG Calls Off Strike

Prof Jane Naana Opoku -Agyemang (12)The University Teachers Association (UTAG) has called off its strike and directed its members to go back to the classrooms from today.

This follows a decision by government to pay them their Book and Research Allowance.

Their decision came after the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the government and the association, bringing an end to the impasse over the Book and Research Allowance for the lecturers.

The association embarked on a strike a couple of weeks ago as a result of a decision by the government not to pay their Book and Research Allowance for the 2013/2014 academic year.

However, the government at a crunch meeting with UTAG yesterday, finally agreed to pay the allowance, bringing the impasse to an end for the lecturers to return to the classrooms.

Currently, the book allowance stands at $1,500 per lecturer per year, while the research component stands at Gh¢400.
