United, City clash in League Cup tonight

UnitedIt is the second Manchester derby of the season as the Red Devils host the Citizens in a  League Cup clash at Old Trafford tonight.

The sides will be locking horn at the Old Trafford for the second time this season and will be going into this derby after some inconsistent and low-helm performance in their last four games.

Manchester United suffered a shameful 4-0 defeat from the hands of Chelsea during the weekend. The Red Devils saw an end to their six games unbeaten run in Jose Mourinhos’ return to Stamford Bridge. United defeated Northampton 3-1 in the third round of the EFL cup to book a place in round of 16.

Manchester City played a 1-1 draw with Southampton on the weekend and extended their winless run to five games in all competition. The Citizens will be going into this derby with a draw- loss-draw form. A shambolic defence and an unproductive forwardline constitutes the major issues for Pep Guardiola for this game. City defeated Swansea 2-1 to advance to the round of 16 stage of the EFL cup.

The Manchester’s fierce rivals are meeting in an EFL cup fixture for the first time in six years. Their last meeting in the competition was in the semi-finals of the 2009/10 edition, a clash united won 4-3 on aggregate over two legs.

The sides have already met once this season, at Old Trafford with City defeating United 2-1 on that occasion as all three goals poured inside the first 45 minutes.

Manchester United’s home record against City in the last six is something that their fans want to forget about as they have managed just 1 win, while losing four and drawing one.

These two sides are in dire need of a win considering their recent run of poor results. Both Manchester sides have been less convincing and have performed far below expectations so far this season. Therefore, this will be a battle between two wounded lions set in an electrifying atmosphere of a derby match.
