UEW Security Guard Convicted For Defiling Girl, 12

A 62-year-old security guard of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), has been sentenced to 15 years imprisonment in hard labour by the Agona Swedru Circuit Court, for defiling a 12-year-old girl.

Abdul Rashid Sowah, alias Francis Okporti, pleaded guilty and was convicted on his own plea.

The prosecutor, Chief Inspector Ave Agadia told the court, presided over by Mrs. Abigail Animah Asare that the accused person is a security guard at the University of Education Winneba, while the victim lives with her parents at Effutu Ansaful.

The prosecution said sometime in June, this year, at about 3 p.m., the accused person was on duty  at the residence of the Vice Chancellor of the University at Effutu Ansaful.

He saw the victim who had then been sent by her mother to buy rice, passing by and lured her into a garage and sexually abused her.

The prosecution said the accused person later gave the victim GH¢5 and threatened to kill her, if she ever revealed the ordeal to anyone.

On July 12, 2014 at about 2 a.m., the victim’s mother, who is the complainant, detected an abnormality in the private part of the girl while she slept.

She therefore, woke her up and questioned her.  She told her of her ordeal in the hands of the accused.

The mother, consequently reported the matter to the police and the accused was arrested and after investigations, arraigned before the court.
