Two Remanded For Robbery

Two people have been re-manded in police custody by the New Abirem District Magistrate Court for robbery.

Padmore Antwi and Kwame Antwi are said to be members of a five-member gang which robbed some passengers on board a 207 Benz bus, with registration number GR 1417 travelling from Kade to Kumasi.

They are said to have shot the driver, Kofi Asare, 42, who escaped and was later rescued by the police and sent to the New Abirem Government Hospital where he died on admission.

The suspects would appear again before the court, presided over by Mr. Iddrisu Kpeglah on August 19.

Prosecuting, Inspector Andrews Danquah said on July 24, this year at about 6:40pm, the police had information that passengers on board the said bus had been attacked.

The informants said on reaching the stretch between James Town and Old Abirem on the Kade-Kumasi road, young men numbering about five emerged from a nearby bush, armed with machetes and logs.

One of them who was carrying a locally manufactured gun, shot into the vehicle through the windscreen, injuring the driver in the chest and the face.

The injured driver, however, managed to stop the vehicle and fled.

The robbers got into the Benz bus and robbed the passengers of a sum of GH¢4,800, three mobile phones and dashed into the bush.

The passengers reported the matter to the New Abirem police.

The police went to the scene and during a search found the injured driver and rushed him to the New Abirem Government Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The body was conveyed to the Ayarkwa Hospital at Nkawkaw for autopsy.

Inspector Danquah said a police patrol team was dispatched to the area the following day and with the assistance of some residents of James Town and Old Abirem, arrested the suspects at their hideout.

They were taken to the police station where they were identified by the victims as two of the five who attacked them.
