Two policemen refused Bail … In Cocaine Trial

The Circuit Court in Accra yesterday refused bail for two policemen, who allegedly stole wraps of powdery substances suspected to be cocaine they seized from Ken Amuzu a suspected cocaine dealer.

The court, presided by Mr. Francis Obiri, remanded them in police custody to appear again on Monday, June 23, 2014, for the court to determine whether to grant the application.

General Lance Corporal Haruna Nantogma, 35, and Lance Corporal Felix Osomi Teye, 35, arrested Amuzu for possessing 49 wraps of powdery substance and four rocky substances believed to be cocaine.

The two policemen, a detective and an investigator, kept 10 wraps and one rocky substance out of the 49 powdery substances and offered them for sale.

They are facing charges of conspiracy to commit crime, to wit, supply of narcotic drugs without lawful authority, and use of narcotic drug.

They have pleaded not guilty and their counsel, Professor Ken Attafuah, argued that the evidence adduced by the prosecution did not support the charges   preferred against his clients.

He said the police must do thorough investigations on cases before they prefer charges and prayed that the court grants them bail.

At the last sitting, the court remanded them, after listening to both the prosecutor and defence counsel respectively.

Prosecuting, Deputy Superintendent (DSP), Abraham Annor, told the court that the offences were non-bailable.

Besides, he argued that the accused were   likely to interfere with investigations, if granted bail.

DSP Annor also prayed the court to remand the two officers to enable the police to carry out holistic investigations into the matter.

However, their counsel, Professor Attafuah, told the court that his clients were police officers with fixed places of abode and would not escape from justice.

The court, however, refused the bail application and remanded the officers to re-appear on June 18, 2014.

The accused are at the Madina and the East Legon Police stations, respectively.  By Malik Sullemana
