Two killed in separate crashes

Two persons, including a marine policeman, died in separate fatal crashes, on Sunday, on the Takoradi-Elubo highway in the Ellembelle District of the Western Region.

Driver, Sulemana Abubakari, 42, died on the spot at New Bakanta whilst General Constable Ayobe Sumaila of the Marine Police, died at Asemko.

The bodies of the two deceased have been deposited at the Axim Government Hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy.

Briefing the Ghanaian Times, the Western Regional Commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU), Superintendent Richard Appiah, said at about 2.45am, on Sunday, Sulemana Abubakari, was driving a Mistubishi pickup with registration No GW 2276-Z, with five occupants on board, travelling from   Takoradi to Eiyinasi, in the Ellembelle District.

On reaching a section of the road at New Bakanta, he said,  the vehicle veered off the road and crashed in the bush, leading to the death of  Sulaimana, whilst the five occupants who  sustained various degrees of  injuries, were rushed to the Eikwe Catholic  Mission Hospital, for treatment.

Later, Supt Appiah explained that arrangements were made to convey the body of Sulemana to the Axim Hospital, in another Mitsubishi 4×4 pickup with registration No GE 6688, driven by General Constable Iddrisu.

Those who  accompanied him included Kafando Mutari, a brother of the deceased,  General Constable Isahaku Taminu  and  General Constable Ayobe Sumaila, all of the Marine Police, Eiyinasi.

Four civilians namely Zonuka Adams, Iddrisu Awudu, Rojah Ayele and Alhasssn Yakubu, all of Eyinasi, he added, were also on the vehicle.

The MTTU Commander told the Ghanaian Times that, on reaching a section of the road at Asemko in the Ellembelle District, a motorcycle crossed the vehicle and the driver lost control of the steering wheel and the vehicle went into a ditch.

“General Constable Ayobe Sumaila died on the spot while General Constable Isahaku Taminu, General Constable Iddrisu Kafando Mutari together with four civilians sustained various injuries and were rushed to the Axim Government Hospital for treatment.

One civilian was referred to the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital Sekondi for treatment while General Constable Iddrisu Kafando Mutari was treated and discharged,” he said.
