A truck carrying cement blocks yesterday morning accidentally ran into some traders and pedestrians in Ashaiman, killing a woman, and injuring another five females and one male.

The incident involving a vehicle with registration number ER5112X, occurred near the Ashaiman traffic light area,

Onlookers helped to push the truck to rescue the injured persons, while the driver wailed uncontrollably and helplessly over the harm caused.

Vegetables and fruits belonging to traders were destroyed and scattered all over the place, while the injured cried for help, and blood splashed over the place.

The Ashaiman Divisional Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Mr. Peter Gyimah, said the police took the victims to the Tema General Hospital, where the doctor confirmed one female dead.

The Police Commander said one out of the six injured was in critical condition, while five others were responding to treatment.

ACP Gyimah said investigation had commenced immediately into the incident.

The Ashaiman Municipal Chief Executive Mr. Albert Boakye Okyere, who joined the Divisional Police Commander to visit the victims at the hospital, described the situation as sad, but asked the people to take heart.

He noted that though traders and hawkers had been cleared off the streets and roads, they had returned, making the road narrow and dangerous for the traders and other road users.

Mr. Okyere advised them to move to the Adjei Kojo market to make the streets and roads free of vehicular movement.

The whereabout of the driver at the time of filing this report was not known.
