Trader jailed 10 years for robbery

arrestPrince Yaw Asomani, a trader has been sentenced to 10 years in prison in hard labour by an Accra circuit court for robbery.

He was convicted on his guilty plea.

Prosecuting, Chief Inspector Kwabena Adu, told the court presided by Mr. Aboagye Tandoh, that the convict and one Seidu, now at large robbed their victim of his Kia Picanto taxi valued at GH¢23,000.

He said on October 10, 2017 Asomani and his friend hired the services of Asomani who was in-charge of the taxi with registration number.GE5076-17 to send them to Amasaman.

The prosecutor told the court that on reaching Pokuase, the convict asked the taxi driver to proceed to Afiaman and he obliged.

He said when they (complainant and convict) got to the outskirt of Afiaman, Seidu, who was seated in the front asked Asomani to stop so they would get off.

The court heard that Seidu put off the engine of the vehicle immediately the driver stopped.

Thereafter, Chief Insp. Adu said Asomani and Seidu pulled the driver off the steering and dragged him on the ground.

He said the accused started the engine and sped off, adding that the taxi driver raised the alarm and Asomani was arrested.

The police officer said Seidu managed to escape into a nearby bush, but the police patrol team rescued Asomani from mob attack.
