Tolon Assembly Moves To Tackle Causes Of Kayayei

THE Tolon District Assembly in the Northern Region has constituted a committee to investigate the causes of kayaye; (head porters) and the background of those involved in the phenomenon, and make recommendations to stem it.

Mr. Abukari Seidu, the District Chief Executive, who announced this, explained that the measure formed part of efforts to tackle child labour in the area, and lamented that some of those engaged in kayaye; were children of school going age.

He said these in a speech read on his behalf, to mark the International Day Against Child Labour, at Tali, in the district.

It was organised by the Christian Children Fund of Canada, a non-governmental organisation (NGO), in collaboration with the Northern Regional Department of Children, United Nations

International Children Emergency Fund, and World Vision, Ghana and ActionAid Ghana, also an NGO .

Mr. Seidu said there was the need to involve communities in efforts to salvage girls and boys from kayaye; and child labour, especially in agriculture.

He said the Business Advisory Centre, under the Rural Enterprises Project in the district, is also tasked to train and give employable skills to children who dropped out of school to enable them to make a decent living.

Mr Iddrisu Sunday, Northern Regional Director of the Department of Children advised parents to avoid engaging their children in work, which could affect their education and health.

There was drama performance, to educate the public on the need to stop child labour and promote the wellbeing of children.-GNA
