Times man assaulted by cocaine suspects’ families

Edem with his torn trousersA Ghanaian Times Reporter, Edem Mensah-Tsotorme, who was covering the case of the six people allegedly involved in the Ruby Ametefe cocaine saga, was yesterday assaulted by relatives of the accused.

This was after the court, presided over by Francis Obiri, remanded the accused to police custody, to reappear on Friday, December12, 2014.

The reporter was assaulted when he attempted to take photographs of the accused outside the courtroom, moments after proceedings ended.

Enraged by the conduct of the reporter, the assailants pushed, heckled him and destroyed his camera.

As if that was not enough, the assailants returned after the accused had been whisked away in a police vehicle, and subjected Mr. Mensah-Tsotorme to severe beatings, tearing his pair of trousers in the process.

Their beef was that, the Reporter had no right to take shots of the accused, who they claimed were their relatives.

He was rescued by a policeman, while his attackers insisted that the pictures of the accused should be deleted from the camera.

A case of assault has since been lodged with the Ministries Police Station.
