Telecom giant, Tigo Ghana, has donated GH¢10,000 as sponsorship for the Digital Journalism Category of this year’s Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Awards slated for August 20.
Speaking at the presentation in Accra, Gifty Bingley, Director of Corporate Affairs, Tigo Ghana, said the company recognised the role and contribution of journalists to the development of the country adding that the unrelenting task of journalists to probe and report on issues and happenings within the country and beyond was critical to achieving development.
According to her, the company’s quest to champion a digital lifestyle for Ghanaians require that the company pursues social change and improve the lives in its communities of operation.
Mrs. Bingley said Tigo Ghana was committed to contributing its quota in promoting responsible and ethical journalism by motivating media personnel to pursue excellence.
Mr. Affail Monney, GJA president, expressed appreciation to Tigo Ghana for its continued support to the promotion of responsible journalism in the country.
As a major stakeholder in the drive towards development, Mr. Monney said the media must consistently be supported and motivated in the performance of its duties.
He said recognition of the media’s role in the society would only serve as a motivation to produce contents, worthy to effect societal change.
Touching on the awards programme, Mr Money disclosed that the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Madam Charlotte Osei, would be the guest speaker.
He appealed to other corporate institutions to also contribute to the realisation of a better media landscape, well-equipped to champion national development.
