The Electoral Commission (EC) office at Tepa in the Ahafo Ano North of the Ashanti Region has been razed down by fire, leaving all documents in ashes.
The District Police Commander of Tepa, Superintendent Cosmos Damoah, who confirmed the incident to The Ghanaian Times, said the incident occurred around 2am, Monday.
Supt. Damoah disclosed that though personnel from the district fire station were quick to respond to distress calls, their efforts at putting out the fire did not yield the desired results.
Asked about the cause of the inferno, Supt. Damoah said his outfit and the Fire Service have opened an inquiry to find out the course.
He said that the police would be talking to people who witnessed the fire outbreak when it started.
“Police will document information, witnesses will relay to us about this incident, then we will open investigation into the case.”
Efforts made to reach the Tepa District EC boss proved futile and Mr. Wabi, the head of Fire Service declined to speak to The Ghanaian Times.
An eyewitness, Frank Afoakwa, also confirmed to The Ghanaian Times that Fire Service personnel went quickly to the place because their office was located close to the EC office.
He, however, disclosed that the tender of the Tepa Fire Service was faulty hence the inability of personnel to put out the fire.
He said they were compelled to put a call to their colleague Fire Service personnel in Goaso who came to help put out the fire.
