Tennis: Top prize for Darko

The 13th edition of the Accra seniors’ tennis open championship ended over the weekend with Ghana’s number one seed, George Darko winning the professionals category.

The top seed defeated Daniel Quartey 7-6, 6-2 to emerge winner of the Japan Motors sponsored tournament. Quartey who had earlier defeated defending champion Wisdom Na Adjrago could not match up to Darko who put up a spirited performance.

Darko took home a trophy and an amount of GH¢1,000 as winner’s cash prize.

In the other categories, Sammy Sayibu defeated Ismailie 6-1, 6-1 in the men’s 30-39 singles final with Doe Adjani retaining his crown by beating Dr. Bankah 6-7, 7-5, 12-10 in the men’s 40-49 age category.

Lawrence Lartey won 5-7, 6-3, and 10-4 against Kobby Brew in the men’s 50-59 singles final while Nana Yaw Ampaw beat Joe Paddymo 6-5.

Mr. Adjani went on to partner Samy Sayibu to beat Tomas Zagvurka and Kobby Brew to win the 50-59 men’s seniors doubles.

Kofi Boakye combined with Nana Yaw Ampaw to annex the 60-69 men’s seniors double with Beasson Affram partnering Saban Annan to win the 70 years and above men seniors’ doubles.

In the ladies doubles, Portia Asubutey combined with Abigail Odoi to emerge winners with Isaac Dapaah and Kate Aboagye winning the mixed doubles.

All winners took home products from the sponsors as prizes.
