Some irate youth in Tamale yesterday besieged the premises of the Volta River Authority (VRA) now Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDco) and destroyed property worth thousands of Ghana cedis.
The cause of the action was not yet known but many of the workers suspected it had to do with the on-going load shedding.
The Northern Regional Public Relation Officer of NEDco, Alhaji Mohammed Siam, in an interview The Ghanaian Times, said the youth overpowered the security personnel and damaged windows and office equipment, and some motorbikes and vehicles.
Alhaji Siam told the paper the youth then continued to the Ghana Grid Companies (GRIDco) yard and destroyed a lot of property.
The main gate to the building and other materials in the yard were destroyed.
Alhaji Siam, however, said no worker of either company was injured.
The PRO said the matter had been reported to the security agencies and political authorities of the region.
A source at the Northern Regional Security Council (NREGSEC), said GH¢5,000 had been set aside as a reward for anyone who reveals the identity of any of those involved.
The added that NREGSEC members were furious and irritated about the incident and therefore, vowed to deal ruthlessly with anyone connected with the vandalism at the VRA/NEDco and GRIDco.
