tardi polyTakoradi Polytechnic has been nominated as the Best Regional Polytechnic in Science and Education by the Europe Business Assembly (EBA).

The award means that the Polytechnic has attained ‘European Quality’ standards and the institution will be included in the official register of leading enterprises and educational establishments by the EBA.

It will be presented at the Oxford Summit of Leaders to be held on December 17, 2013 in Oxford in the United Kingdom.

In a statement signed and issued yesterday by Anna Gorobets, EBA International Relations Manager, the award is in recognition of the Polytechnic’s professionalism in teaching and learning, quality of researches, introduction and realisation of international programmes as well as contributions to national educational development in 2012.

“We must admit successful work of your Polytechnic in professional, scientific and educational directions as well as high level of professionalism by its alumni in the fields of work”, it said.

The statement added that “these key factors together with stainless reputation, dynamic growth, and sustainable scientific achievements led the Socrates Committee to nominate your Polytechnic as the Best Regional Polytechnic”.

It said this year’s summit which would be held between December 16 and 18 2013, would deliberate on issues pertaining to modern trends in the development of higher education, transformation of the traditional education system, the influence in globalisation and modern education programmes.

Others are innovative methodologies in student teaching, continued adaptation of education programmes to current demand, cooperation of higher educational institutions with employers through work placements and future jobs for students.

The Oxford Summit of Leaders in Science and Education is an annual forum of investors, academics, University Dons, and Rectors from Europe and around the world.

It affords the leaders the opportunity to discuss new trends in higher education, the popularization of modern educational programmes and methods, the presentation of scientific advances and emerging innovative solutions and extension of international cooperation in scientific and educational spheres.

Commenting on the honour done the Polytechnic, Professor George Oduro, chairman of Takoradi Polytechnic Council, congratulated the Rector for winning the award and for his efforts in putting the Polytechnic on the global map of leading educational establishments.

For his part, Prof. Nyarko noted that achieving the feat and others were not surprising taking into account the high quality of academic excellence programmes and research work being pursued by lecturers and students alike and that such high performances should definitely bring laurels to the institution.

He disclosed that in November 2012 the Polytechnic was ranked first for upholding high excellence in examination ethics and practices by Exams Ethics Marshalls International.

“Again, the introduction of industry-focused programmes and the establishment of modern laboratories to train the youth for careers in the emerging oil and gas and other allied industries placed the institution above her competitors to merit such recognition”, he said.

Prof. Nyarko encouraged faculty members to keep up the stream of research and publication of high and relevant education materials in internationally recognized journals and endeavour to make quality presentations ant reputable conferences to either sustain or improve on the ranking.

The Polytechnic maintained its 2012 first position among polytechnics in Ghana and placed third in Sub-Saharan Africa, coming after Auchi Polytechnic and Yaba College of Technology, both in Nigeria. - Winston Tamakloe
