Kofi Ofori, the Chief Executive of Ablekuma North Municipal Assembly has observed that the strength of the assemblies determines the extent to which they can effectively and efficiently impact on the lives of the citizenry.

He said the Assemblies should pursue systematic approach towards maximising revenue potentials in order to transform communities.

Speaking at the 2018 First Ordinary Meeting of the assembly at Darkuman-Kokompe in Greater Accra, Mr Ofori noted that “implementing innovative measures to maximise revenue by the assemblies, has become an essential function that cannot be ignored.

“The following measures to review of revenue data, zoning of the municipality for easy revenue targeting, engagement of private collection firms, utilising personnel under the NaBCo to collect revenue/data and procurement of a bus for revenue mobilisation and sanitation activities to transform communities within the municipality.

“Others are public sensitisation on obligation to the assembly, procurement of Revenue Information Management System (RIMS) and reviewing the appointment of revenue staff, run an open administration where views of assembly members and other stakeholders will be given paramount consideration.

“Out of the total of GH¢ 7, 247,157.00 as its share of the District Assemblies Common Fund for 2018 only GH¢ 1, 237,425.28 has been received, in the case of Internally Generated Fund (IGF), the assembly has collected GH¢ 1,125,988.73 representing 24.64 per cent out of the approved target of GH¢ 4,569,085.00 as at September 30, 2018.

“Since assuming office about two month ago, one of the major challenges confronting the effective administration of the assembly is lack of adequate office accommodation coupled with increasing numbers of staff posted to the assembly.

“Plans are advanced to take over a building on the assembly’s sanitation site and develop it to an administrative block to house the assembly,” Mr Ofori stressed.

Alhaji Mohammed Labaran, the Presiding Member of the assembly, urged the assembly members to be very serious with the work of the assembly to expedite development in their various electoral areas.

Alhaji Shehu Kadiri, Municipal Co-ordinating Director, promised that management of the assembly would co-operate and work with the assembly members to ensure development of the newly created municipal assembly. -GNA
