Stars’ Defender For Slovekian Club

john MensahBlack Stars general captain John Mensah has finally signed up with Slovakian club FC NITRA since ending his loan spell at former club Stade Rennes due to persistent injury problems.

The 31-year-old who has played only seven games since the 2011/12 season by his free agent status has decided to revive his career by ignoring offers from the Czech Republic to sign with the Štadión pod Zoborom side managed by Ladislav Hudec.

An excited FC Nitra General Manager Joseph Petráni said: “John [Mensah] came from Lubos MoravCik initiative, which I appreciate very much. When you hear the name John Mensah, people who are interested in football sit up. If you look at his resume, where he played and how much, it is very interesting. I do not know the last time a player with such a history played for Nitra.”

Petráni also revealed how eager the club were to sign the ex-Lyon and Sunderland centre-back when they were informed of the opportunity to sign him but admitted that the Ghanaian may be rusty as he has not played actively in the last six months.

“An opportunity to sign him presented itself, we took it and John is working with us. It is true that in the last six months, he has not operated at a level that would follow on from his past, and has disappeared from the screens. However, since he came, he has played the football he knows about. I believe he will be ready physically to help us the most this season,” Joseph Petráni explained.

Nitra who lie last but one on the log of the 12-team the Slovakian Super Liga will be hoping to have Mensah ready for his debut next Saturday, March 1 in an away fixture against Spartak Trnava.

*The importance of Ghanaian goalkeeper Adam Kwarasey to Stromsgodset was brought into sharp focus as they suffered a humiliating 15-0 walloping to Lokomotiv Moscow in his absence.

The 26-year-old was given a rare rest in their pre-season game against the Russian giants in Spain.

The Norwegian champions however suffered perhaps their worst ever loss in their 107 year history – and all due to the absence of their inspirational captain Kwarasey.

The Ghanaian international has been the safest pair of hands since arriving from Valerenga in 2007.

Stromsgodset contemplated selling off the Black Stars goalkeeper after their victorious domestic campaign but will be revising their notes following Sunday’s humiliating defeat to Lokomotiv Moscow.

Russian striker Roman Pavluchenko and Senegalese foward Dame Ndiaye led the rout against the clueless Stromsgodset team who were coming from a 3-0 loss to another Russian side CSKA Moscow.

Both teams are preparing for the resumption and start of their various domestic leagues and the qualifying round of the next season’s Champions League.

*Ghana defender John Boye made his second French Ligue 1 appearance of the season by playing the entire duration of Rennes’ 3-0 win at Nantes.

The centre-back’s last game was back in August 2013 when they drew 0-0 with Lille at home.

Boye returned to competitive action after a lengthy injury layoff two weeks ago when he featured in the 1-0 win over Auxerre in the Coupe du France.

He has been invited for Ghana’s international friendly against Montenegro next month.

Boye picked up a hip injury after captaining Ghana in the defeat to Japan in an international friendly.

*Michael Essen replaced Sulley Muntari in the 64th minute as Milan went away to beat Sampdoria 2-0. Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu made way for Hasan Yebda in the 88th minute as Udinese drew 1-1 with Atalanta at Stadio Fruili.

Elsewhere in the Turin derby, Kwadwo Asamoah played full throttle and assisted Carlos Tevez’s goal as Juventus beat Torino 1-0. Ahmed Barusso was not in the Torino team. Raman Chibsah played the first 45 minutes as Sassuolo lost 2-3 away to Lazio.

Alfred Duncan played 90 minutes for Livorno who lost 3-2 at home to Hellas Verona. Godfred Donsah was on the Verona bench. Masahudu Alhassan played the entire game as Latina drew 0-0 away with Virtus Lanciano.

Boadu Acosty was a 90th minute substitute for Carpri who lost 2-1 to Cesena. Centre back Moro Alhassan was on the Cesena bench. Left-back Nii Nortey Ashong was on the Spezia bench as they drew 1-1 away with Palermo.
