St Joseph School emerged champions at the just-ended Greater Accra Regional competition of the Brain Battle National Science and Math Quiz for basic schools organised in Accra on Thursday.
They became victors after thrashing 11 other schools including St Theresa’s School and Holy Child Junior High School which took the second and third positions respectively in the quiz competition launched earlier this year by John Bonaventure Kwofie, the Archbishop of Accra.
The rationale of the quiz is aimed at demystifying the study of science and maths through exciting competitions that would deepen the interests in the subjects using practical activities to lay a solid foundation for the Ghanaian child.
Archbishop Kwofie stated that most children tend to avoid science and maths because the subjects were not appealing to them, saying “It is for this reason also that we created this quiz to create an interest in children at this early stage to spur them to pursue careers in these fields,” he added.
He disclosed that the contest revolved around Catholic Schools because it is a pilot project but expressed hope that in due time other non-Catholic schools would participate.
The winning contestants, Elim Vester-Field and Benedict Kumi overwhelmed by their win managed to thank the organisers for allowing their school to participate.
The winners, however, called on the would-be winners of each region saying “we are ready for you”.
The teachers from the school also expressed their joy stating they believed their school was going to win the regional contest and that they were proud of their students and the other regions better watch out.
The contest was the first of the regional competitions to be held with the other regions being held from now to November with the grand finale to be held in Cape Coast.
