Soldier in trouble over GAF recruitment scam

A Kumasi district magistrate court has deferred the sentencing of army Corporal George Desmond Amoah, 34, to February 27, 2019, after he pleaded guilty to collecting GHȻ8,500 from two women, under the pretext of helping their children to be recruited into the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), in 2015.

Cpl Amoah was subsequently remanded into police custody by the court presided by Mrs Christine Cann, awaiting his fate, on the charge of defrauding by false pretences, when he made his maiden appearance last Friday.

Police Inspector Michael Kwaakye , prosecuting, told the court that  Cpl  Amoah, was stationed at the headquarters of the Military Central Command in Kumasi.

The court heard that the soldier collected a total amount of GHȻ 8,500.00 from Madam Agnes Ayivor, trader, and Elizabeth Kublenu, farmer, both complainants, and residents of  Mankranso in the Ahafo Ano North district of Ashanti, in 2015, with the promise  of helping  their children get enlisted into the GAF.

Police Insp Kwaakye explained that Cpl Amoah promised to help the son of Madam Ayivor, who had gone through the GAF enlistment process and was waiting for the results.

Prosecution said Cpl Amoah convinced Madam Ayivor that he had been helping people to gain admission into the army, and demanded GHȻ3, 000.00 from the woman so that he could assist the son, and she paid the money.

Insp Kwaakye said Madam Ayivor discussed the deal with Madam Kublenu, whose daughter was also waiting to be selected to join the army, and she (Madam  Kublenu) parted with GHȻ5,500.00, but the soldier failed to fulfil his promise.

The complainants reported the case to the Kumasi Central Police Station, which led to the arrest of Cpl Amoah.

The court heard that, during investigation, Cpl Amoah admitted the offence, and refunded only GHȻ1, 000, 00 to Ayivor.
