Show Lazy Teachers The Exit

TWO schools of thought have expressed their indignation at the prevailing poor standards of education in the country.

While IMANI Ghana, a policy think tank, is worried about the way negative attitudes of some teachers are affecting teaching and learning in the classrooms, the Inspectorate Division of the Ministry of Education is yet to come to terms with the mass failures in this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

IMANI’S Vice President Kofi Bentil argues that there is no justification for maintaining teachers in schools with the necessary resources, while students or pupils continue to score zero per cent in their final examinations.

He has, therefore, suggested to the Ghana Education Service (GES), to take bold steps and dismiss non-performing teachers, as a way of improving standards in the public schools.

On the other hand, Dr George M. Afeti, the Chief Inspector of Schools, says a myriad of challenges, among them poverty and non-availability of adequate infrastructure, are responsible for the high drop-out rate in the basic schools.

He warns that if nothing is done to check the drop-out rate, the future of the country may be in jeopardy.

The Times agrees that education is a vital tool in national development and should, therefore, not be toiled with, whatsoever.

Indeed, the poor academic results, especially at the basic level, is a worrying phenomenon for parents and guardians who have to struggle to raise funds to support their children’s education.

It is in this vein that the Times supports the call by IMANI GHANA to the GES to ensure that the right teachers are appointed to prepare the children adequately for high school education, and beyond it.

Much as the country needs more teachers to fill the vacancies in the basic schools, it is equally important that we do not achieve this by upholding mediocrity.

We also urge parents to get involved in the training of their children by supervising their homework, since they spend more time at home than at school.
