Securitymen Save Tema Com. 1 Market From Being Gutted

Picture 028But for the timely intervention of security personnel, the Tema Community 1 Market would have been razed down by fire yesterday.
This is the third time in six months that a fire disaster at the market had been prevented by the vigilance of securitymen.
Fire officials suspect that all the three attempted fire outbreaks may be the work of arsonists.

Conducting pressmen round the fire scene, the Tema Regional Fire Officer, Glifford Tetteh, said at about 3:15 am security men in the Tema Community 1 Market saw smoke emerging from the market and alerted personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service on patrol at the market.

He said when the personnel arrived at the scene in about two minutes they saw that some of the wooden tables used by the traders to display food items were on fire and they quickly brought it under control in just a few minutes.

The fire, which started at a point near the main fire hydrant in the market, burnt a wooden chair, table, four bowls two of which contained a quantity of dough and a Bible. A wooden electric pole near the spot, was also burnt.

Mr. Tetteh said the fire could have easily spread in view of the congested nature of the market had it not been put out quickly.
He said in view of the previous fire incidents in the market and elsewhere, personnel of the deparment and the police have been patrolling the market at night.

According to him, they had information that some squatters had been sleeping in the market after it closes at 6:30 pm and therefore urged the Tema Metropolitan Assembly to get everybody out of the market after it had closed. From: Godfred Blay Gibbah
