Robbers kill baby in ambulance

Armed robbers on Sunday attacked an ambulance that was coveying an ailing baby and mother to the Wa Regional Hospital for an hour, resulting in the death of the child.

The incident occured when the 10-day old baby was being transferred from Tumu in the Sissala East District, to the Wa hospital for further treatment after being in an unstable condition since birth.

A source close to the police told The Ghanaian Times that the baby and the mother were onboard the ambulance to Wa, and on reaching a spot near Han in the Jirapa District, four men suspected to be armed robbers, emerged from the bush and stopped the vehicle.

The robbers asked the occupants, including the driver to come down.

The robbers beat up the driver of the ambulance and made him lie down flat on the stomach before robbing him of his belongings including mobile phones.

He said the mother of the baby was beaten before her belongings were taken away from her.

When the robbers brought their operations which lasted more than an hour to an end the baby had passed.

The driver of the ambulance subsequently lodged a complaint with the police.

When contacted, the Regional Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Police Service, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Joy Afagbadzi confirmed the incident.

He said the police had commenced investigations into the incident and would ensure that persons involved in the heinous crime were brought to book.
