A 19- year-old trader has been sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for robbing a trader at Mataheko, in Accra.
Awangaba Abelenya, attacked the trader at knife point and made away with her bag containing GH¢32.
The presiding Judge, AboagyeTanor found him guilty during the trial and sentenced him accordingly.
Prosecuting, Chief Inspector Edward Afful said on October 6, 2015 when the motorbike on which Abelenya and one other accomplice (pillion rider) were sitting on got close to the trader (victim) who was walking by the street, he got down and snatched the handbag which had GH¢32 in it.
He also took her mobile phone and jumped onto the motor bike and they sped off.
Chief Inspector Afful said she raised an alarm which attracted some residents and he was given a hot chase by a driver.
“In the course of escaping, the motor run into a ditch and the pillion rider who had fallen over the motorbike was apprehended by the mob whilst the rider escaped with the mobile phone,” he added.
He said the victim’s hand bag was found on the suspect and the knife was later retrieved by the police when they visited the scene.
When interrogated, the suspect declined to give the police the name of his accomplice as he claimed the motor rider was a commercial ridder whose services he had hired.
The prosecutor said he, however, admitted the offence and was put before the court.
