Rioting students to pay for damages

Rioting students of three senior high schools (SHSs) in the Northern Region are to pay the full cost of properties destroyed by them during their rampage.

The schools are; Salaga Ahamadiya, Karaga and Nalerigu senior high schools.

The Northern Regional Director of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Alhaji Mohammed Harun Kambodia disclosed this to The Ghanaian Times in an interview yesterday and added that the students would also be made to sign bonds to be of good behaviour.

He also revealed that two teachers of the Karaga SHS were to be sanctioned for misconducting themselves during the rioting in the school.

Students of the three schools on different occasions went on the rampage and destroyed various properties of their schools worth millions of Ghana cedis.

A number of the students were arrested during the riots which resulted in the temporary closure of the three schools.

One person was killed in the rioting at Salaga when the students, supported by some residents, clashed with the police.

Alhaji Kambodia said all the three schools were still temporarily closed down and would only be opened after the report of the committees set up to investigate the causes of the riots had been received and studied.

He said the decision to make the students pay the full cost of the destroyed school properties was to serve as deterrent to others.

He said his outfit would take every step to halt lawlessness in the schools in the region. adding, “we would not spare anyone who misconducts himself or herself.”

“I am prepared to instill discipline in schools in the region and anyone be you a teacher or students, who violates, any school rule, would be severely sanctioned,” he warned.
