Reverend (Rev) Father John Alphonse Asiedu, Society of Divine Word (SVD) has been elected as the new Apostolic Vicar of the Apostolic Vicariate of Donkorkrom in the Eastern Region.

He takes over from Most Rev Gabriel Edoe Kumordji SVD who is now the Bishop of Keta–Akatsi Diocese, which has been vacant for two years.

Apostolic Vicariate is a form of territorial jurisdiction of the Catholic Church established in missionary regions and countries which do not have a Diocese.

The announcement was made by Very Rev Fr Lazarus Anondee, the Secretary General of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference in Accra yesterday.

He said the new Apostolic Vicar was elected by His Holiness, Pope Francis, and the news was released from the Apostolic Nunciature, by Most Rev Jean Marie Speich, the Apostolic Nuncio.

Rev Fr Asiedu was born on May 1962 at Adeemmra-Kwahu in the Afram Plains, to the late Opanin Daniel K.Boadu from Adjena and the Akwamu Traditional area and to Madam Rebecca Akua Boadu from Nkonya Ntumda.

In 2001, Rev Fr Asiedu studied Religious Eormation course at the Institute of St.Ansiem, Cliftonville, Kent, England taking up the following Diploma Certicates: Diploma in Human Growth and Development, Postgraduate Certificate in Individual and Group Psycho-Spiritual Counselling Skills and Human Development and Certificate in Integrative Group Facilitation.

Some of his major assignments are as follows: Director of Overseas Training Programme,SVD Ghana Province from 1998-2001; 2003-2005,Assistant Novice Director, Divine Word Novitiate,Nkwatia-Kwahu-1999- 2001.

In 2002-2005, he was SVD Ghana Province Treasurer; from 2005-2008, Director of Divine Word Catholic Conference Centre, Nsawam- Addoagyiri; from 2005-2008, Chairman of SVD Ghana Province Formation Board; and was the Prefect of SVD Common Formation Centre, Tamale from 2008-2014.
