Refurbished St Augustine SHS chemistry lab inaugurated

The refurbished chemistry laboratory of the St Augustine’s Senior High School, Bogoso, in the Prestea Huni-Valley municipality of the Western Region, was inaugurated on Wednesday.

Funded with the Minerals Development Fund (MDF) at the cost of GHȻ230, 000, the facility undertaken by Manit Construction, Accra, has been equipped with new gas and water taps, slabs, electrical fittings and has also been repainted.

The project, executed through the efforts of the Member of Parliament for Prestea Huni-Valley, Mrs Barbara Oteng-Gyasi, with support from the Prestea Huni- Valley Assembly, would enhance the teaching of science within the catchment area and beyond.

Unveiling a plaque to open the laboratory, Mrs Oteng-Gyasi, explained that the provision of infrastructure and the necessary tools for schools helps in providing a conducive environment for learning and also improves the educational sector.

She said that the government would continue to support the educational sector to enhance students’ learning experiences.

According to Mrs Oteng-Gyasi, who is the Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, the provision of better facilities ensures better attendance and excellence, believing that the refurbished facility would benefit the students immensely as they receive first-hand experience in various experiments.

She said the government was focused not only in excellence, but also to ensure that education played its role in national development, stressing “education remained a top priority of the government”.

“This is to help the youth to be competitive on the global market and become pacesetters in science and technology and so take advantage of these facilities in the school,” she told the students.

Applauding the MDF for the support, the MP said the fund was established to support communities affected by mining to ensure the legacy of life, even after mining operations.

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mr Mozart Kweku Owu, stated that the project was in fulfillment of the government’s commitment to the municipality because “education is a catalyst to proper development”.

He said the government was also desirous not only to help teachers and improve the educational facilities in the municipality, but also award scholarship to those who excelled in the sciences, even up to the tertiary level.

Mr Owu thanked Mrs Oteng-Gyasi and the MDF for the instrumental role they played in the refurbishment of St Augustine’s laboratory and advised the school to ensure a good maintenance culture.

Noting that the project had been long overdue, the Municipal Director of Education, Miss Vida Koufie, believed that the chemistry laboratory would promote the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4, which promoted quality education.

The Headmistress of St Augustine’s Senior High, Ms Mary Yamson, assured that the laboratory would be used to enhance teaching and learning.
