Ref. Laryea dropped from AFCON list

The Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) has selected referees for the upcoming 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), later this month in Egypt, with no Ghanaian referee in the list.

CAF named 56 officials, made up of 26 centre referees and 30 assistant referees to handle matches for the 32nd edition of the biennial tourney.

However, Ghana’s top referee Daniel Laryea, who was part of the initial list of referees for the pre- tournament seminar failed to make the cut for the event.

The last time a Ghanaian referee was appointed for an AFCON tourney was in 2015 in Equatorial Guinea, where Joseph Lamptey and Malick Alidu Salifu were named in the list.

The list had referees from Egypt, Tunisia, Zambia, Seychelles, Madagascar, Tunisia Cameroon, Burundi, Kenya, Ethiopia, Senegal, Algeria, Angola, Botswana, Morocco, South Africa, DR Congo, Rwanda, Chad, Comoros, Lesotho, Libya, Niger, Sudan, Republic of Congo, and Uganda.

The biggest Africa football festival is set to commence on June 21-19 July in five cities in Egypt namely, Ismailia, Cairo, Alexandria, Suez and Port-Said.

The 2019 AFCON has been increased from 16 to 32 teams for the month-long tourney. –GNA
