Public Toilet Toll Collector In Trouble

mohammedEbenezer Adotey Mingle, a public toilet toll collector, was last Friday arraigned before an Accra District Magistrate Court for discharging liquid human waste into a public drain near the Osu Castle.

He pleaded not guilty to the charge of discharging effluent into a drain and was granted bail in the sum of GH¢ 3,000 with a surety. He is to reappear on August 20.

The court, presided over by Isaac Addo, ordered that the facility be closed until further notice.

He further ordered the accused to clear the mess he had created or the court would deal ruthlessly with him and directed officials of AMA to furnish the court with the hygienic condition of the facility at the next adjourned date.

Prosecuting, Madam Linda Kumbuno, an officer of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) Public Health Directorate, told the court that with the upsurge of cholera and the intensification of public education on how to prevent an epidemic, the accused declined to inform the Water and Sanitation Directorate of AMA when the septic tank was full.

She said the accused at dawn on July 31, emptied the tank and discharged the waste in a drain near the Osu Castle.

Madam Kumbuno said the accused’s action created a nuisance for residents in the area who caused his arrest when he attempted to escape.

An application for bail by counsel, Atta Kofi Abankwa, was upheld by the court with the assurance that the accused would be of good behavior and clear the mess.
