Deadly knives, which can be folded into the shape of searchlights, originally imported into the country by some security companies for lawful operations, are now in possession of some members of the public.
They can be bought on the ‘black market’ at various prices, not only in Accra, in the Greater Region, but in other regions as well, investigations by The Ghanaian Times have revealed.
Some members of the public fear the proliferation of the knives, during the countdown to the general elections, was a serious threat to the country’s peace.
When contacted last week, Superintendent (Supt) Adamu Seidu, Volta Regional Crime Officer, warned that it was unlawful for individuals to possess such offensive weapons.
“For that matter we will deal swiftly and ruthlessly with any individual selling them and those buying them,” he said.
Supt. Seidu asked members of the public to promptly volunteer information to the police on those dealing in the knives, some of which bear mini stickers of the flags of some foreign countries.
