The Veterinary Services Directorate of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA), has warned members of the public not to patronise donkey meat slaughtered at unapproved abattoirs.

“The Veterinary Services Directorate wishes to state that the slaughter houses in the country are not approved for the slaughter of donkeys and sale of the meat to the public,” said a statement signed and copied to The Ghanaian Times by Nelson Akatey, Public Relations Officer of MoFA.

It said slaughtering of donkeys was being carried out at the Kumasi Abattoir for some Chinese, who export the hide.

“The Veterinary Services Directorate does not give permit for the slaughter and sale of donkey meat. The public is encouraged to be on the lookout and report the sale of any such meat to the nearest veterinary services directorate of MoFA.”
