President congratulates Nigerian President Buhari on re-election

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has congratulated President Muhammadu Buhari on his re-election for a second successive term, as President of Nigeria, in the elections of Saturday, February 23 , 2019.In a Facebook post, he said, that the re-election of President Buhari was a renewal of the confidence Nigerians have in his programme of governance, which had job creation, diversification of the economy, the revival of Nigeria’s agriculture and the fight against corruption as its priority.President Akufo-Addo further congratulated the ruling party, All Progressives Congress (APC), for maintaining control, in an emphatic manner, over the Senate and the House of Representatives.
He urged President Buhari to continue on the path of delivering unity, security, progress and prosperity to the Nigerian people.“It is my sincere hope that President Buhari will continue on the path of delivering unity, security, progress and prosperity to the Nigerian people. It is also my overriding hope that, during his second term, the already strong relations between Ghana and Nigeria will be deepened even further, on a shared agenda of stability, security, development and prosperity. Strengthening the frontiers of Nigerian democracy, and consolidating the peace and stability of Nigeria, Africa’s giant, are important for the progress of our region and continent,” he said. President Akufo-Addo extended his best wishes to the people of Nigeria and the country’s success.
In a related development, former President John Mahama has also congratulated President Buhari and some leading members of the APC.
In a post on Twitter, he said “Congratulations to President Buhari, Vice President Professor Osibanjo, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and all friends in the APC on your successful re-election for another four-year term.”
President Muhammadu Buhari was announced as the winner of the presidential election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for a second four-year term.
The 76-year-old defeated his main rival, former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, with a margin of nearly four million votes.
Mr Abubakar’s People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has rejected the result. Turnout was a record low at just 35.6 per cent.
Delays and violence marred the run-up to Saturday’s poll but no independent observer has cited electoral fraud.
In his victory speech, President Buhari said “the new administration will intensify its efforts in security, restructuring the economy and fighting corruption.”
Overall, the APC got 15.2 million votes while the PDP polled 11.3 million.
