A POLICEMAN was shot and killed by suspected armed robbers before dawn yesterday at the Radiance Gas Filling Station at Alai, along the Mawuli Estate–Adaklu road in Ho.
This comes exactly three weeks after six masked men raided the Goil Filling Station at Ho-Bankoe and made away with GHc45,000.
A police spokesman who confirmed the story, said the robbers also took away the duty weapon, an AK-47 assault rifle, used by the deceased.
He said the incident took place at about 1 a.m.
According to the spokesman, officers on patrol duty in the area heard a gunshot from the scene, prompting members of the team to rush there, only to see a masked man standing by a human body on the gound, while another one was trying to force open the burglar-proof door of the office of the station.
The officers then retreated to call the Control Room at the Ho Regional Police Headquarters which immediately dispatched another team to the scene, the spokesman said.
The masked men fled into the nearby bush as soon as the police team arrived at the station, where the body of Constable Atseku of the Rapid Deployment Force was found lying in a pool of blood.
Several attempts by The Ghanaian Times to contact the Volta Regional Police Commander, Mr. P. Y. Gyinae, on phone and in his office for comment proved futile.
At the Regional Police Headquarters, the Deputy Regional Police Commander, Mr. W. A. K. Akpesey, told The Ghanaian Times that he would not be able to make any comment in the absence of the Regional Commander.
The Regional Crime Officer, Superintendent A. Seidu, could also not comment, based on the same reason.
The Regional Police Operations Commander, Chief Superintendent E. K. Asare answered a call from The Ghanaian Times prior to filing this report, but said he was at a meeting.
The body of the deceased has been sent to the Police Hospital mortuary in Accra, while investigations continue.
