Police question father over daughter’s death

The father of the three-year-old girl, who was beaten to death by his lover at Mempeasem, near East Legon in Accra, has been invited to assist police in investigations.

Leroy Kofi Tando told the police he travelled to Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region to work when the incident happened.

Speaking to The Ghanaian Times, the East Legon District Crime Officer, Deputy Superintendent of Police( DSP) Belinda Banini, said Tando told the police he received a call from Judith Atatsi, his girlfriend, that the child fell down and died.

She said Atatsi was currently standing trial at the Madina Magistrate Court on a provisional charge of murder.

DSP Banini said investigations revealed that Atatsi, unemployed, used the heels of her shoe to beat the girl for playing with electrical gadgets.

The crime officer said the body of the girl, which was found with marks all over it, had been deposited at the Police Hospital morgue for autopsy.

According to the police, an examination on the body revealed scares from old injuries and two of her teeth had been broken with blood oozing out of her mouth.

DSP Banini said the girl lived with her 27-year-old mother, Felicia Abotsi, a trader, at Dzorwulu, in Accra, until her father forcefully took her away under the pretext of spending the weekend with her.

DSP Banini said Abotsi reported the incident to the police after Tando informed her that her daughter was dead.

The mother said, Tando told her that the child was sick and was on admission, but refused to give her details about the hospital she was admitted to.

The Crime Officer said Tando informed Abotsi that the child had died.

DSP Banini said when the police accompanied Abotsi to the house at Mempeasem, where the girl was staying with the father, they found the body lying on a bed with blood stains in the house.

DSP Banini said Abotsi claimed Tando took the child from her in December 2015 to spend the weekend with the child’s paternal grandmother at Takoradi in the Western Region.

DSP Banini said Abotsi told the police that, the father told her that  he had been transferred to Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region, and that he was taking the child along.

According to Abotsi all effort to reach her daughter proved futile.

Atatsi told the police in her statement that she had left the girl in the room to withdraw mobile money from a vender, but returned to find her playing with electrical plugs.

According to her, she became angry when she saw the girl play with electrical plugs, and hit the girl on the head twice with a stick. The girl collapsed and attempts to resuscitate her with water failed.

According to the police, Tando brought Atatsi who is his lover from Takoradi to take care of the deceased, while he travelled to Bolgatanga to work.
