Police overpower robbers in shootout

Three suspected robbers have been arrested in connection with a highway robbery on the Kofiase-Krobo road in the Mampong Municipality of Ashanti, which left two dead and eight others injured, last Thursday.

The suspects, yet to be identified, are believed to belong to a gang, which attacked a commercial vehicle on the Kofiase-Krobo road.

The group was said to have engaged in a shootout with a police team which went to the crime scene, and resulted in one police man sustaining injury but the robbers fled.

A police source confirmed to The Ghanaian Times, that the suspects were flushed out of their hideout at the weekend upon a tip-off.

According to the source, the police were hunting for the other members of the gang who were believed to have fled with weapons.

According to the police source the robbers shot and killed one person and wounded two others.

But, it said, another vehicle which ignored an order to stop was said to have ran over six of the passengers the robbers had ordered to lie on the road, killing another passenger.

The police source gave the names of the deceased as Evans Anane, 13, and Beatrice Opoku, adding that their bodies have been deposited at the mortuary of the Mampong Government Hospital.

The eight other victims, who received gunshot wounds, were receiving treatment at the Mampong Government Hospital

Meanwhile, the injured police man, Inspector Francis Ahadzie is receiving treatment at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.
