Police intercept 800 boxes ammunition

The Boxes of cartrigesThe police have impounded hundreds boxes of ammunition being transported from Accra to Techiman in the Brong-Ahafo Region.

They comprise 800 boxes of Rio AAA and BB cartridges concealed in the luggage compartment of an O.A bus with registration number AW 6758-12.

The driver of the bus, Kojo Billy, 47, and his mate, Abraham Yorke, 23, and one Alhaji Wenchi have been arrested to assist in investigations.

Speaking to newsmen, the Accra Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, said on July 21, at about 8:30 p.m., police personnel on duty at Dobro barrier on the Accra-Nsawam highway, intercepted the bus on its way to Techiman.

He said a search conducted on the bus, revealed 800 boxes of Rio AAA and BB cartridges in the luggage compartment of the bus.

He said upon interrogation, Billy claimed his mate Yorke, loaded the goods on the bus without his knowledge and that Alhaji Wenchi of Techiman was to receive the goods.

DCOP Yohuno said further investigations led to the arrest of the Alhaji, adding that the bus had been impounded and the exhibits kept by the police.

He said the suspects were in police custody assisting with investigations.
