More than 40 motorcycles have been impounded by the Police in the Accra metropolis during an operation by the Central Motor Traffic and Transport Department(C/MTTU).

The exercise which was conducted on Monday and Tuesday was carried out by the ‘Red Light Team’ of the C/MTTU to ensure sanity on the roads.

Some of the riders were arrested for jumping red light at the traffic lights near the Kinbu Senior High School area, driving on the shoulders of the road, riding without helmet and licences among others.

The Commanding Officer of the C/MTTU, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Anderson Fosu Ackaah who disclosed these to the Ghanaian Times in Accra yesterday, stating that the activities of some of the riders posed danger to road users and other commuters.

The Commander said the riders would be processed for court soon for violating road traffic regulations.

ACP Fosu-Ackaah said 32 drivers were also arrested last month for abusing the red light, using sirens without authority.

He said of the number, 17 were convicted to a total fine of GH¢9,340 which had been put into the consolidated fund.

ACP Fosu-Ackaah stressed the need to ensure that the negative activities by the riders were discouraged in the metropolis to ensure that lives and properties were saved.

He said the exercise would be replicated in other areas to ensure that the roads were safe.

The Commanding Officer called on drivers to abide by the road safety regulations to protect lives and properties.
