Poku, Yong excel in Ghana-China Golf competition

The Minister of Youth and Sports, Mahama Ayariga has lauded the Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, Sun Baohong and the Chinese Community in the country for their efforts in developing sports in the country.

“The People’s Republic of China, apart from assisting in the energy sector, has contributed tremendously to sports development in the country,” he stated.

The minister said this at the third edition of the Ghana-China Friendly Golf Invitational compe-tiotion played on Saturday and aimed at strengthening ties between the two countries to foster development across all sectors, especially sports.

Ayariga noted that China is financing the construction of a new stadium in Cape Coast to serve the number of high schools and universities in the area as part of their sports development agenda.

He tasked the Chinese community in the country to take up other sporting disciplines to ensure it is developed to the highest level.

Winners on the day include, Zheng Yong who put up an impressive performance to win the Group B event with a net score of 65.

Wang Shu came second in Group A while Zhou Zheng emerged runner-up in Group B.

The third place in Group A and B went to Zhou Liang Hua and Shu Jun respectively while the Closest to the Pin went to Tang Hong. Mr. Opoku also won the Longest Drive prize while Jim Ekdman settled for the Booby Prize.

Also addressing the participants, captain of the Celebrity Golf Club, Francis Akwasi Opoku lauded the Chinese Ambassador and the Chinese Community in the country for their effort in promoting golf in the country.

The captain described the event as a success and urged corporate entities to get involved to develop the sport in the country.
