A 35-year-old painter has been arrested by the police for allegedly possessing a locally manufactured gun without authority, at Edwenase near Osino in the Eastern Region.

Akwasi Aboagye, who is currently in the custody of the police assisting in investigations, was arrested by the National Highways patrol team during a snap check on the Nsawam-Suhum highway.

A police source confirmed the arrest to the Ghanaian Times, here yesterday.

According to the source on July 27, at about 12noon, the suspect, who was on board a Sprinter bus with registration number GT 4621-16 was intercepted by the police

The source said a routine check on the passengers on board the vehicle, led to the discovery of the locally manufactured pistol in Aboagye’s bag.

“The suspect was arrested and gun was taken to the Nsawam District Police Command for further investigations,’’ the police source indicated.

The police source said during interrogation, Aboagye told the police that the gun was given to him to by his friend, one Kwabena from Edwenase two months ago, for his protection.

According to the source, efforts were being made to accost his friend to assist in investigation, and that the suspect would soon be arraigned for charges of possession of fire arms without authority.
