Addressing participants at this year’s Asantehene Gold Cup sponsored by MTN, the Asantehene said the introduction of golf as an Olympic sport must pose a challenge on the golf authorities to put in place several strategies not to only make the sport popular in the country but identify hidden talent cast in the mould of Tiger Woods, the celebrated golfer.
He urged the golf clubs to embark on an ‘Operation find the Tiger,’ to spot and harness promising talents who will be able to rub shoulders with the best in the world.
According to the Ashanti king, it should be urgent on both government and the corporate world to collaborate to find ways of developing golf to the highest standard.
As a golf enthusiast, he has ensured Ghana’s acceptance into the European golf family and could now compete in the European circuit, through his initiative.
He has also commenced a campaign to produce a crack team competent enough to represent Ghana at the Rio Olympics with the initiation of the national youth competition which is in its third year.
In developing the sport to be popular in all corners of the country, the Asantehene advised the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the National Sports Authority (NSA), the two institutions responsible for the development and promotion of sports to share resources equally among the several disciplines.
He said it was time to end the practice where the country’s resources are invested in one discipline and leave the rest to survive under very difficult circumstances.
