Obinim granted GH¢2 million bail

Bishop Daniel ObinimBishop Daniel Obinim, leader and founder of International God’s Way Church was yesterday granted Police enquiry bail in a sum of GH¢2 million with two sureties.

He is to report at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) headquarters of the Ghana Police Service occasionally to assist in investigations.

The Head of the Documentation Fraud Unit of CID, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Seth Sewornu, disclosed this to The Ghanaian Times in Accra yesterday, stating that the case was still under investigations.

Bishop Obinim was arrested on Tuesday by the police for allegedly defrauding a gold dealer of GH¢11.6 million.

Bishop Obinim was reported to have instructed the complainant in the case, Bismark Kusi, to bring the money to him for it to be blessed.

Bishop Obinim was detained by the Documentation Fraud Unit of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to assist in investigations.

The Director of Operations at the CID, Chief Superintendent  Felix Mawusi,  told The Ghanaian Times that on November 28, 2015, Kusi gave GH¢780,000.00 to one Okomfo Dzakpata, of Mampong-Nkwanta, near Koforidua in the Eastern Region, to assist him (Bismark Kusi) deal with the proceeds of gold, belonging to his family.

He said the complainant in a desperate move to recover the said amount from Okomfo Dzakpata, visited Bishop Obinim for assistance.

Chief Supt. Mawusi said Bishop Obinim instructed Kusi to bring the remaining family ‘gold money’ to him (Obinim) for it to be blessed.

Chief Supt. Mawusi said the complainant sent GH¢11.6 million to Bishop Obinim, adding that when the victim went back to collect the money, Bishop Obinim told him to come in two weeks time.

He said anytime the complainant went to the suspect to demand his money, he kept on telling him fabricated stories.

According to Chief Supt. Mawusi, on July 31, this year, the suspect sent a text message to the complainant, which read: “Bismark, my senior brother told me you said the money you brought to me is 12 million Ghana Cedis”.

“Mr. Bishop Obinim, I said the money is GH¢11.6 million and I told you last month that I will give all your money back to you by end of the month”. I have heard that you have told some big men in this country about the money.  Please stop that, because I don’t like that bye bye” he added.
