Bishop Daniel Obinim, Leader and Founder of International God’s Way Church was yesterday arrested by the police for allegedly defrauding a gold dealer of GH¢11.6 million.
Bishop Obinim was reported to have instructed the complainant in the case, Bismark Kusi, to bring the money to him for it to be blessed.
He was detained by the Documentation Fraud Unit of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service to assist in investigations.
Bishop Obinim reported to the CID at about 3:30pm, dressed in a multi coloured suit in the company of some church members and sympathisers.
The Director of Operations at the CID, Chief Superintendent Felix Mawusi told The Ghanaian Times that on November 28, 2015, Kusi gave GH¢780,000.00 to one Okomfo Dzakpata, of Mampong-Nkwanta, near Koforidua in the Eastern Region to assist him (Bismark Kusi) deal with the proceeds of some family gold.
He said the complainant in a desperate move to recover the said amount from Okomfo Dzakpata visited Bishop Obinim for assistance.
Chief Supt. Mawusi said Bishop Obinim instructed Kusi to bring the remaining family ‘gold money’ to him (Obinim) for it to be blessed.
Chief Supt. Mawusi said the complainant sent GH¢11.6 million to Obinim, adding that when the victim went back to collect the money, Bishop Obinim told him to come in two weeks time.
He said anytime the complainant went to the suspect to demand his money, he kept on telling him fabricated stories.
According to Chief Supt. Mawusi, on July 31, this year, the suspect sent a text message to the complainant, which read: “Bismark, my senior brother told me you said the money you brought to me is 12 million Ghana Cedis”.
“Mr. Bishop Obinim, I said the money is 11.6 million Ghana cedis and I told you last month that I will give all your money back to you by end of the month”. I have heard that you have told some big men in this country about the money. Please stop that, because I don’t like that bye bye” he added.
