A Psychiatric nurse, Joshua Penni, 28, was yesterday charged by an Accra Circuit Court, for allegedly having sex with a female mental patient.

The accused is facing a charge of having canal knowledge of a mentally deranged patient, contrary to section 102 of act 29/60.

Prosecuting, Kofi Atinibire told the court that the victim was admitted at the Valley View Psychiatric Clinic in Dzorwulu, where the accused worked, on June 1, 2015.

He added that on June 18, 2015, after she took some medicine, the victim felt weak and drowsy.

Persecutor said when the accused reported for night duties at about 10 pm on same day, he went to the ward of the victim and saw her lying on the bed alone and allegedly had sex with her.

The next day, Friday June 19, the accused went to the victim’s ward again and had sex with her for the second time.

He said the victim then told her family, who subsequently informed the hospital authorities about the ordeal which led to the arrest of the accused.

However, the counsel of the accused, Kwesi Appiah, prayed the court to grant the accused bail.

According to him, the accused had already spent one year in police custody, adding that a person who had not gone through trial should not suffer for that long in custody.

Mr. Appiah added that the accused had a place of abode and people to stand surety.

Consequently, the court, presided over by Abena Oppong Adjin-Doku, upheld the submission of the counsel for the accused and granted his client bail and adjourned the case to July 11.
