The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) yesterday schooled staff of New Times Corporation on the National Identification Card (NIC).

According to Mr Ebenezer Tetteh-Wayo, Accra Metro Director, NCCE, the card would replace all cards therefore, the need for everyone to seize the opportunity and register.

He indicated that mass registration of the card would end after a year while that of the constituency would end after three weeks.

Mr Tetteh-Wayo added that the National Identification Authority (NIA) after one year would establish offices in all the districts therefore, those unable to seize the opportunity could do so.

He noted that the card was free and that nobody should be charged for acquiring one.

Mr Tetteh-Wayo indicated that the cards would not be issued to children between the ages of 0 to 14 instantly saying “it is believed that these children are not developed yet ”.

However, he said the cards would be issued instantly to children aged 15years and above, adding that they were grown hence it is believed that their thumbprints are peculiar to them.

He added that the card was genuine and would be accepted nationwide saying “ if you misplace it, report to the police station or the nearest NIA office.”

Mr Tetteh-Wayo said Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) would soon come out with a date which would enable anyone with the card to move to any of the ECOWAS countries in and out without using your passport.

He therefore, said it was an offence for any institution to reject the card and advised the public to visit available centres to register.
