The Nsawam Municipal Assembly (NMA) in the Eastern Region has allocated GH¢50,000 towards the clearing of refuse in eight communities in the area.

The exercise, code named “Operation clean Nsawam” which started four days ago would ensure that heaps of waste in the communities were collected and dumped at a Landfill site

The communities include Gyankrom, Avagar, Adoagyiri, Wangara, Operakrom, Ayigbe town, and Ntoaso among others.

The Municipal Chief Executive Officer (MCE) of NMA, Mr Ben Ohene Ayeh, disclosed this to journalists when he toured waste filled sites at Gyankrom and Avagar, where excavators were busily collecting the refuse into trucks to the landfill site at Nsumia near Dobro.

He said the exercise, a collaboration between the assembly and the Zoomlion Ghana Limited would help clean the filth which had been in the areas for a long time.

Mr. Ayeh said the assembly received complaints from the residents of the existence of such refuse dumps and the stench emanating from them.

The MCE said the assembly would ensure that waste containers were placed at vantage points to ensure that the residents dumped their waste into them.

Mr. Ayeh stated that the waste would be cleared within weeks to prevent diseases such as cholera, malaria and diarrhoea.

A resident at Gyankrom, Mr. Kweku Asante, commended the Assembly for the gesture.
