NRGP revives rice industry

Rice PixThe Northern Rural Growth Programme (NRGP) is making frantic efforts to revamp the rice industry in the country by offering financial and technical assistance to rice farmers.

Mr. Roy Ayariga, National Project Coordinator of NRGP speaking to a cross section of rice farmers at a demonstration field at Nabugu in the Sevelugu/Naton municipality, stressed that the program was not only supporting rice farmers to increase production but also to create good market for them.

The field demonstration was part of the rice value chain productivity and quality improvement project under NRGP.

“We encouraging rice farmers more especially the small holder farmers to adopt best farming techniques as means of increasing the quality rice production in the country,” the coordinator emphasised.

He advised farmers to do away with the outmoded methods of farming and embrace the new trends in rice farming.

Roy Ayariga mentioned nursing and transplanting as one of the new and convenient methods of increasing rice production and urged them to adopt it in order to minimize cost and maximize profit.

Mr. William Boakye Acheapong, Northern Regional Director of Food and Agriculture on his part entreated the farmers to always pay back loans granted them by the various banks.

Mr. Achempong said the best way to encourage banks to support farmers was to ensure that farmers pay back their loans.

Musah Adma Bawa, a rice farmer commended the NRGP for supporting rice farmers adding that but for timely support of the NRGP many of rice farmers in the area would have been out of business.
